U of L toasting 50 years with 25-year-old scotch
Scotch enthusiasts may consider celebrating the University of Lethbridge's 50th anniversary with a 25 yearold scotch.
It’s not the first time the university has used scotch as a fundraising tool. During their 45th anniversary, the U of L Alumni Association's private bottling raised $10,000 for student scholarships.
In light of previous success, alum Doug McArthur and Gord Jong sought the help of Max Baines, retired owner of Andrew Hilton Wine & Spirits, to create a similar initiative.
Four hundred bottles of single-malt scotch whisky have been sourced from Gordon & MacPhail in northeastern Scotland. The $400 bottle excludes shipping costs, but comes packaged in a special wood case celebrating the occasion.
As a result, the university stands to raise around $50,000 for scholarships.
“This time around, we have secured a cask so I can truthfully tell anyone that the scotch we’ve had bottled is totally unique,” said McArthur in a press release.
“For $400 you’re getting an excellent scotch and a commemorative box, you’re doing something positive for U of L students and you’re going to get a tax receipt for $155.”
The Alumni Association will be holding a 2017 Scotch Tasting for those who desire a taste, but not an entire bottle, on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Markin Hall Atrium.
Attendees will be guided through a flight of six scotches — including the commemorative bottle.
Tickets to the tasting event are $75 each or $600 for a table of eight.
