Meals on Wheels Christmas campaign is rolling
The annual Meals on Wheels 23 Days of Christmas campaign officially begins this week and is already off to a great start.
A majority of the campaign days have already been sponsored, however more individuals and businesses are still needed to help support the Meals on Wheels program, which provides hot nutritious meals to members of the community who otherwise could not provide for themselves.
Ryan Miller of Teamwork Training Ltd., who helps facilitate the campaign, said 15 days have already been sponsored, with a goal of raising $25,000 over the month of December.
“It’s a great collection of many companies and organizations and individuals that come together,” said Miller.
“It’s not about receiving, it’s about giving. So it’s a fantastic feeling within the community that these groups come together and allow the Meals on Wheels organization to continue.”
Along with the opportunity to sponsor a full day of meals, the initiative also includes a Christmas card campaign which helps sponsor a single meal. Cards are available at Cupper’s Coffee and Tea, Crazy Cakes and Urban Grocer.
Rob Miyashiro, executive director of the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization which runs the Meals on Wheels program, said the annual Christmas campaign has allowed them to keep the price steady for those who use the service despite increasing internal costs.
“It allows us to subsidize the cost of the meals for people that are low income,” said Miyashiro.
“We’re truly indebted to Teamworks and all our community sponsors for the work that they’ve done to help make Meals on Wheels a success.”
