Vandervlis done for season
Lethbridge Hurricanes will be missing a key part of their lineup tonight — and for the rest of the season — when they host the Red Deer Rebels at the Enmax Centre.
The Hurricanes, looking for their third straight victory, announced Tuesday that 19-yearold forward Ryan Vandervlis will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, thinning the team’s forward ranks and costing them a veteran presence. The six-footthree, 215-pound product of Red Deer had 11 goals and 19 points in 19 games in his third season with the Hurricanes.
The Canes enter the game following a 4-1 win over the Victoria Royals Saturday night at the Enmax Centre and a 7-2 road win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Sunday. Canes captain Giorgio Estephan had a goal and five assists for a six-point afternoon in the road win, while second-year defenceman Calen Addison wasn’t far behind, putting up five assists. That earned Addison the WHL Player of the Week award thanks to one goal and eight points in four games. The Brandon product has six goals and 32 points in 27 games.
Estephan leads the Canes with 13 goals and 40 points in 47 games, while assistant captain Jordy Bellerive leads the team with 17 goals in 26 games.
The Hurricanes, attempting to move above the .500 mark with a victory tonight, are tied for second in the Central Division with the Kootenay Ice (13-15-1-0), but have two games in hand on Kootenay.
