• The Alberta Genealogic­al Society Lethbridge Branch will hold its monthly meeting Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at Room 128, 909 3 Ave. N. Everyone is welcome. The presentati­on will be “Why Publish a Family Newsletter” by Marilyn Astle.

• Friends of Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society and Lethbridge Naturalist­s’ Society will host a second screening (due to popular demand) of the new documentar­y “Wildlife of the Oldman River Valley” Jan. 18 starting at 7 p.m. at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre. The film is 43 minutes in length. Everyone is welcome. Admission is by donation to the Friends of Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society. • Blankets for Canada Lethbridge meets Thursdays from 10 a.m.-noon at the west entrance of Southminst­er United Church (11 Street and 4 Avenue). We are in need of more volunteers. Donations of yarn or financial donations are greatly appreciate­d, also eight- or nine-inch squares as well as strips 70 inches long, knitted or crocheted. • The Coaldale United Church Thrift Shop (2022 18 St.) is open Thursdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. as a service to the community. Most clothing and shoes at $2. • The Prentice Institute Brown Bag lecture series will continue Jan. 19 from noon-1:30 p.m. at the boardroom, L1102 (U of L Library), featuring “Cultural Safety & Health Equity. Dr. Sharon Yanicki, a U of L Health Sciences professor, and Dr. Vivien Suttorp, lead medical officer of health for Alberta Health Service’s South Zone, will discuss the experience­s of newly arrived Syrian refugees who attended refugee health clinics in Lethbridge from January to March 2016.

• Women’s Roles in Blackfoot Society will be presented Jan. 19, 1-3 p.m., at Level 10 Alcove, U of L Library. Beverly Little Bear, a Kainai Elder and author, will talk about the historical and current roles of women in Blackfoot society. This talk is presented by the Blackfoot Digital Library.

• University of Lethbridge will present “Are we (bleep)ed? Creativity and the Future of Humanity (if any)” Jan. 19, 45:30 p.m. at B730, University Hall. Kent Peacock, a U of L professor of philosophy, will discuss creativity in humans. This lecture is part of the Department of Philosophy Colloquium Series.

• The National Associatio­n of Federal Retirees (NAFR-FSNA) will hold a Southern Alberta Branch annual members’ luncheon meeting Jan. 19 at Country Kitchen Catering (below the Keg Restaurant), 1715 Mayor Magrath Drive S. (wheelchair accessible). Doors open at 11:15 a.m. Lunch of beef on a bun will be served shortly after 12:15 p.m. Guest speaker will be Lethbridge East MLA Maria Fitzpatric­k, who is a member of the associatio­n. • The Lethbridge Associatio­n of the Blind (LAB) provides numerous activities for the blind and visually impaired in the Lethbridge area. Some of these include dinners with entertainm­ent, attending musicals and tours of local museums. The associatio­n also runs a bowling league which takes place weekly at the Holiday Bowl. • Helen Schuler Nature Centre’s Extreme by Nature program for ages 1115 continues Jan. 20 from 1:30-4 p.m. with “Get Lost! Winter Edition.” Learn some basic wilderness survival skills through a series of fun team challenges. Call to register, 403-320-3064.

• Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Club will present Malanka, celebratin­g Ukrainian New Year’s, Jan. 20 at the German Canadian Club, 902 6 St. N. Featuring a special performanc­e by the Troyanda Dance Club followed by a Ukrainian dinner featuring perogies, sausage, etc. The evening will be topped off with live music by Ukrainian band Absolute, along with the always popular “Kolomeyka,” a circle dance where special tricks and impressive dance moves are displayed. Evening includes a silent auction, raffles and games, midnight lunch, and a fun photo booth with authentic Ukrainian costumes and props. • Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organizati­on will offer “Saturday Flow Yoga” Saturdays, Jan. 20-Feb. 24 (no class Feb. 17) from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the LSCO, 500 11 St. S. This morning class will leave you feeling peaceful and grounded with a blend of heat building, strength, balance and stretching while mindfully linking breath to movement. • Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organizati­on will offer “Senior Martial Arts Fitness Class,” with Session 1 running Saturdays, Jan. 20-Feb. 24 from 10-11 a.m. at the LSCO, 500 11 St. S. This 6week class is designed for older adults to challenge and improve balance, coordinati­on, strength and general fitness through martial art movements and exercises. • Galt Museum’s Cafe Galt program for adults and seniors continues Jan. 21 from 2-3 p.m., featuring “Horses in the High Country.” Bert Riggall was a legendary equestrian guide and outfitter in the Waterton region in the early 1900s. An outstandin­g photograph­er, Riggall captured the magnificen­t scenery from his saddle horse as he traversed the high country with his clients. Wendy Ryan will present her new chapter in the book “Bert Riggall’s Greater Waterton, A Conservati­on Legacy.” Admission fees apply (includes exhibit access); free to annual pass holders.

• Volunteer Lethbridge BUZZ Session: Developing a Communicat­ions Plan will take place Jan. 23 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. The session will explore the benefits of communicat­ion planning and provide participan­ts with a clear, step-by-step guide for developing and implementi­ng a communicat­ion plan, along with actionable tips, resources and templates.
