Horn rugby 7s reach tourney final

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby 7s team earned their best finish in a Sevens Series tournament in the first stop of the season last weekend.

The Pronghorns were in Edmonton for the first of three weekend series and advanced to the final Sunday, where they were defeated 35-7 by the Victoria Vikes to finish the weekend at 3-2-1.

Lethbridge started the weekend with a 26-21 win over the host Alberta Pandas Saturday.

Hailey Driscoll ran for two tries and Genna Wright and Caitlin Sears each had one. Sears added three converts.

The Pronghorns second game of was against the same team they faced in the final Sunday as Lethbridge was defeated 42-14 by the Vikes.

Brittany Orr opened the scoring for the Pronghorns, but the Vikes replied with four tries before the first half.

Driscoll scored the other Lethbridge try early in the second half.

Sears and Hannah Lopez added converts for the Horns.

Lethbridge improved to 2-1 in their last game Saturday, blanking the Fraser Valley Cascades 50-0.

Carolyn McKee put up three tries for the Pronghorns and Orr scored two.

Sydney De La Mare, Lopez and Emiola Olalekan added one try each.

Lopez kicked four converts and Sears had one.

On Sunday, the Pronghorns tied the defending Canada West champion Calgary Dinos 14-14 as Driscoll and Abigail Duguid scored the Lethbridge tries. Lopez and Sears each kicked a try. The Pronghorns notched their third win with a 29-12 win over the UBC Thunderbir­ds.

McKee, Lopez, Driscoll, Sears and Orr were the Horns try scorers. Sears added two converts.

In the final against Victoria, an Orr try and a Lopez convert opened the scoring, but the rest was all Vikes as Victoria posted the win.

The Canada West Rugby 7s series heads to Abbotsford, B.C. Feb. 10-11 as the Fraser Valley Cascades host the second of three tournament­s this season.
