Kodiaks looking to sweep Trojans

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

If hosting the number one-ranked team in the country isn’t enough, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s basketball team has a bit of an extra adrenaline boost tonight.

The Kodiaks hit their Val Matteotti Gymnasium home court at 8 p.m. as they welcome the SAIT Trojans for Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference action.

After handing the 13-1 Trojans their first loss of the season with a 90-77 win on Thursday that earned the Kodiaks an important win and improved them to 7-7 on the season, they’ll look to take a pair off of SAIT tonight.

They’ll ride the momentum of Thursday’s win into tonight.

“Our compete level was high the second half, we gave up 50 points in first (half) and 27 points in second,” said Kodiaks head coach Ryan Heggie, whose team is tied for fourth place with the Ambrose Lions in the South Division. “SAIT’S shooting cooled off the second, but our defence gets some of that credit.”

The Kodiaks shot 47.2 per cent from the field, 35.7 from beyond the arc and 60 per cent on free throws.

Lethbridge also outrebounded the Trojans 41-30 and recorded 26 team assists.

“A solid win for us,” said Heggie. “We had lots of guys going there and for us that is what our strength is.

“SAIT is number one for a reason. They’re good and will be ready to play again tonight. It should be another great ACAC game.”

After losing 61-46 Thursday in Calgary, the Kodiaks women’s game against the Trojans goes at 6 p.m. tonight.
