City council rules finders keepers for thrift store
EMPLOYEES FIND 15,200 GHANIAN CEDI ($3,500 CDN.) IN THE STORE
A large amount of found foreign currency is being returned to the store where it was discovered after the owner failed to claim it.
During their regular meeting on Monday, city council passed a motion to return 15,200 Ghanaian Cedi (about $3,500 Cdn.) to Marlene Braak, manager of the Mission Thrift Store where the money was found last year.
On April 16, an assistant at the store found a green wallet on the floor containing the money.
“We think it was dropped somewhere,” said Braak. “It was picked up by one of my assistants. But we don’t know whether it fell out of their pocket, or if it was in an article of clothing.”
Lethbridge Police Service made several attempts to locate the owner of the money but was unsuccessful.
Police efforts included a media release in May, as well as discussions with Lethbridge Immigrant Services and community groups.
The Municipal Government Act states found money which has not been claimed by the owner may be claimed by the finder after 30 days at the will of council and following a written application by the finder.
Braak made the request to have the money returned. She said the money will be going to the Bible League Canada, which the Mission Thrift Store has a partnership.
Part of the work done by Bible League Canada involves literacy programs in developing nations.
The organization partners with Christian ministry organizations to reach people in more than 40 countries worldwide.
The work falls into four categories of programs: Children’s Ministry, Starting New Churches, Adult Bible-Based Literacy and work within the Persecuted Church.
