Golden Hawks back on track

The Lethbridge Val Matteotti bantam AAA Golden Hawks returned to the win column in Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League play last weekend.

The Golden Hawks defeated the Calgary Royals 4-2 Saturday in Lethbridge and then headed to Calgary Sunday, where they shut out the Calgary Flames 5-0.

Those wins come after an 0-2 outing the prior weekend and improved the Golden Hawks to 19-9-4 for third place in the Ram South Division, three points behind the Red Deer Rebels (20-7-5) and six points behind the first-place Airdrie Xtreme (21-4-6).

On Saturday, the Golden Hawks and Royals were tied 2-2 after the second before Joel Mabin scored his second of the game with 7:51 remaining for the game-winner and Rylen Roersma added an insurance goal with eight seconds left.

Colin McLeod scored in the first period for Lethbridge.

Colby Garner had three assists and goaltender Tyler Palmer had a 38-save performanc­e, including 18 in the second period.

On Sunday in Calgary, Erick Roest made 19 saves to earn the shutout.

Nolan Price scored twice in the first period for the Golden Hawks and Conner Furukawa added two more in the second.

Colin McLeod completed the Golden Hawks scoring in the third period.

Syprus Ives had two assists for Lethbridge.

The Golden Hawks are in Okotoks Thursday night to take on the Oilers before the Oilers come to Lethbridge Sunday for the rematch at noon at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
