Plenty to do on Family Day
There are a number of events taking place across the city for those looking to find something to do this coming Monday on Family Day.
Monday will feature an annual “sugar shack” celebration presented by local members of the Alberta French Canadian Association. The event will offer maple treats from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. for $2 at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre.
The Nature Centre will be open extended hours on Monday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature its “Brain Zone” activity and other indoor challenges.
At the Galt Museum, free attractions will include history-themed photo booths with period costumes as well as crafts, games and free popcorn.
In the Galt’s archives, genealogists will be on hand to help visitors trace their family trees.
More Family Day events will be held at Casa from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
No-charge activities will include button making, “box city,” trading cards, art activities and “musical fun.”
There will also be no-charge Family Day activities (1 to 4 p.m.) at the Lethbridge YMCA, including swimming, bumper balls, art activities, fun in the gym, and hula hoop classes.
Activities will also include face painting, use of indoor play spaces and a bouncy castle.
A number of swimming pools will be open, while a free skating session will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
Family Day will also feature free admission to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, for celebration of the “Full Moon of the Eagle.” A hunt reenactment, with an opportunity to participate as a buffalo runner, will be on tap along with guided building tours and an opportunity to meet some residents of the Birds of Prey Centre from Coaldale.
Crafts, storytelling, a simulated archeological dig and “living off the land” artifact demonstrations will also be part of the event, running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The University of Lethbridge is bringing the beach indoors as the theme for Play Day 2018.
The seventh annual Family Day play event happens Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness.
It was Initiated in 2012 as a way to celebrate family and the benefits of play.
“It’s exciting to us that this has become a Family Day tradition in southern Alberta,” said U of L President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon in a recent news release.
Activities for the event include the now classic Free Build cardboard
fort building zone.
Various sporting activities such as basketball, floor hockey, swimming and "fitastic" play, and access to the Ascent Climbing Centre’s climbing wall, and an art and creative activity zone. Children will have an opportunity to learn about the formation of tornados, constructing balloon-powered boats, creating interactive games with Scratch
technology and more.
Play Day is a free event and people are encouraged to bring gym shoes, comfortable clothing and a swimsuit to enjoy all the activities.
