Cougar girls move into third place

The top four spots in the girls Southern Alberta High School Basketball League standings just got a bit closer.

The Cardston Cougars varsity team earned a 6950 home win over the Magrath Pandas during league action Saturday afternoon in Cardston.

The win improves the Cougars to 6-2 on the season and into third place, just ahead of the 6-3 LCI Clippers with Cardston holding one game in hand.

That also puts Cardston two points behind the second place Pandas (7-3). The Raymond Comets remain in top spot at 8-0. On Saturday, the Cougars got a 21-point afternoon from Morgan Gibb. Haylie Holland added 11 points for Cardston and Madison Leishman scored 10.

For Magrath, Montana Berezay led the way with 16 points and teammate Madi Cook had 11.

In the junior varsity game, Cardston earned a 52-43 win as Lauren Wolsey scored 13 points for the Cougars.

Hannah Barfuss replied with 12 points for the Pandas.

In boys action Friday, the Medicine Hat Mohawks downed the Catholic Central Cougars 102-94 at the Catholic Central East campus.

With the loss, the Cougars are 3-8, while the Mohawks improve to 3-6. Both teams are tied for fifth in the SAHSBL.

The Cougars trio of Nate Moreira, Shae Gibb and C.J. Hirsche topped the 20-point mark. Moreira led the way with 31 points, Gibb scored 23 and Hirsche added 22.

Luis Arida chipped in with 11 points for Catholic Central.

Eidan Jonker led the Mohawks with 24 points, while Jaxon May and Parker Davidson each scored 16.

Ethan Egert, Ben Menesho and Bailey Gosse hit for 13, 11 and 10 points for Medicine Hat, respective­ly.

In the junior varsity game Catholic Central won 71-68 for their first win of the season as Fernando Vega led the way with 21 points.

Daniel Marcic and Tommy Strikes With A Gun each scored 10 points for the Cougars.

Austin Walton had 12 points for the Mohawks and Orin May and Jonathan Van Dam each had 11.
