SACPA hosting two sessions today

-

Two Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs sessions will take place today.

First, during the regular weekly meeting at noon at Country Kitchen Catering, speaker Katharina Stevens will present “Is the Canadian Government’s new Mandate for its Summer Job Program Grants Respectful of Religious Rights and Freedom of Conscience?”

Then, this evening at the University of Lethbridge, MLA Shannon Phillips will discuss some of the Alberta government’s tensions, balances, successes and failures of managing, conserving and using the natural resources, wildlife and lands of Alberta.

Stevens, an assistant professor of philosophy at the U of L, where she teaches legal philosophy and argumentation theory, will attempt to disentangle some of the possible misunderstandings surrounding the question whether the mandate for the summer job program is respectful of religious rights and freedom of conscience.

She will not provide a definite answer but will try to surround the question with clarifications and background considerations that can help with creating an informed and thoughtful opinion. The speaker will then hand the whole package back to the audience for the Q & A, looking forward to their engagement.

That session runs Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Country Kitchen Catering.

From 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., in Room L1060, (just inside to the left) at the U of L’s Library Building, Phillips, Alberta’s Minister of Environment, Parks and Climate Change, will present to professor Bruce McKay’s Liberal Education class.

SACPA was invited and the public is also welcome. Free parking is available in lot E after 5 p.m.
