Coaldale Family Fun Run goes Saturday

-

There will be spring in the air (according to the forecast) and a spring in participants’ steps when the eighth annual Coaldale 5K Family Fun Run takes place Saturday.

The race is designed for all ages and abilities, offering professional chip timing and a flat, easy course to appeal to everyone from the competitive runner to the parent with young ones.

The event will kick off at 10 a.m. Saturday at Coaldale Christian School, 2008 8 St., following a course through scenic rural Coaldale. The easy-to-follow route will be closed to traffic. The whole family can participate, whether to run or walk, including babes in strollers.

All registered participants will be entered into a prize draw. In addition to medals for the fastest three competitors in every category, special prizes are also awarded to the youngest and oldest participants as well as the largest family and fastest stroller pusher. Ribbons are also given to the youngest racers as they cross the finish line, for a job well done.

To register, visit

The Coaldale Food Bank will receive a $2 donation from every entry. Proceeds have been pledged as the final instalment to Project Playground Coaldale East (PPCE).

Adding some friendly competition to the event, 12 businesses have signed up for the Corporate Team Challenge. The largest team will receive a $250 gift certificate to 3G Eatery, while the fastest team will receive an engraved travelling trophy to display at their business — not to mention bragging rights.

New this year is the School Team Challenge, with each student eligible to win one of five $100 gift cards to Sport Chek. For the grand prize, the school with the largest team will be awarded $1,000 to be used toward a school athletic program (with host CCS exempt).

“The Town of Coaldale is delighted to be an annual sponsor of this event that encourages families to be active together,” Mayor Kim Craig said in a news release. “It really is a great way to kick off spring in Coaldale and we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy being active.”
