Citizens can help grow Legacy Park garden
Volunteer support needed to turn public garden plans into reality
Would you like to sit by a tranquil alpine stream to read, to eat your lunch or just to relax or meditate? Would you like to enjoy an hour strolling among colourful flowers?
Would you like to learn about the plants that will grow best in our southern Alberta climate?
Would you like a special place to take wedding photographs or family portraits?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, the ornamental garden in the northwest corner of Legacy Park is the place for you to visit. This new park will feature plants from the mountains to the grasslands, ornamental plants from around the world and favourite heritage plants our grandparents would have grown.
The garden will be a tranquil, meditative, beautiful and educational place that can be enjoyed year round. This public garden is free and will be open 24/7.
The City of Lethbridge provided the land and infrastructure for the garden, but it will depend on volunteers for development and planting. A number of major donations have made the garden anchor — a large water feature — a reality without taxpayer dollars. Thank you to Lethbridge and District Community Foundation, George and Mary Varzari, 1st Choice Savings and Credit Union and the Lethbridge and District Horticultural society for funding this feature.
This summer and fall the water will begin to flow and the flowers will begin to bloom, but the development of the garden will take many years. Plans for an alpine garden, an educational program, expanded plantings, and possibly even a solarium and teahouse depend upon people stepping forward to help. And the help of people who contribute will be recognized.
This is the latest and most ambitious project in the 109-year history of the Lethbridge and District Horticultural Society. If you want to be a friend of the garden, and can help with donations of volunteer labour or of funds, contact the Horticultural Society at
