- Greg Bobinec FOR THE HERALD

Bringing together the local cycling community and encouraging more to people to join the two wheeled community is the BikeBridge Cycling Association, with their first-ever Lethbridge Bike Fest.

The festival continues until Sunday has a wide range of cycling activities for riders of all ages and abilities. Some of the events already hosted include a bike mechanic workshop for teens, cycling skills course, social rides and bike-related film nights.

Today, the BikeBridge Association will be hosting a bikein film night at Galt Gardens starting at 6:30 p.m. Community members are able to bike down to the outdoor film screening to see films such as “Sonic Divide,” “Lee Craig’s Inner Journey Along the Caledonia Way” and “Tales on Tyres.”

The family friendly event is free and there will be prize giveaways for attendees. The only thing required is a lawn chair and snacks to enjoy the films. If there is inclement weather, the event will be moved into the Lethbridge Public Library theatre.

The weekend is filled with events including a free bicycle scavenger hunt and barbeque on Friday night at the Henderson Lake picnic shelter, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday is for the children to get inspired by cycling and learn about safety and the rules of the road with the Lethbridge SportFest Bike Rodeo. There will be checks to make sure that helmets fit properly as well as nearly 100 helmets to give away with 10 new bikes up for raffle.

The final day of the festival on Sunday falls on BMX Day in Alberta, which is an initiative aimed at encouraging new participants to try BMX and to promote the Olympic sport of BMX racing. The event starts at 10 a.m. and welcomes everyone to join and get on the BMX track.

The cycling community looks to showcase the many different ways to have fun on two wheels, and invites everyone out to get involved in the events. For more information and full schedule on the #YQLBikeFest, visit yqlbikefest.ca.
