- Greg Bobinec FOR THE HERALD

The Lethbridge Public Library has teamed up with Lethbridge Pride for the 10th annual Lethbridge Pride Fest, with a month’s worth of celebratory events throughout June.

Pride Month at the library will host a number of activities such as author talks, a guide to LGBTQ+ terminology and a wide range of movies.

Paige McGeorge, Lethbridge Public Library film organizer, said they are excited to be involved and have great films that tell the stories within the queer community.

“We are excited to feature a number of Pride events during the month of June,” says McGeorge. “This year’s film lineup includes a diverse range of movies, from drama, comedy to documentaries and Calgary’s Fairy Tales Presentation Society is bringing a documentary called ‘Outlier,’ which tells the story of the queer community in Calgary from the 1960s onwards.”

Events off with a Queer 101 guide to LGBTQ+ terminology guide presented by OUTreach Southern Alberta. The discussion focuses on proper terminology, language, clarifying terms and providing a safe space for people to discuss sexual orientation and gender identity.

Queer 101 will also identify what it means to be an ally to the queer community and what someone can do to show their support.

Every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. feature films such as “My Prairie Home,” “Venus” and “Suicide Kale” will be played in the Theatre Gallery of the library. The films are free to attend and will also be providing popcorn for no charge. After each film there will also have an open discussion of the film’s content.

The library, in partnership with the University of Lethbridge Bookstore and English Department, has also brought in two authors to discuss their novels revolving around LGBTQ+ community issues. Suzette Mayr will be discussing her book “Dr. Edith Cane and the Hares of Crawley Hall” on June 7. Sophie Labelle will be discussing her book about a young trans girl called “Assigned Male” on June 14.

The 10th annual Pride Month at the library kicks off Friday with organizations hosting events throughout Lethbridge and in towns across southern Alberta. For more information on the library’s events, visit lethlib.ca or for the full event calendar you can visit lethbridgepride.ca.
