Children asked to attend Soldier’s Plot rededication ceremony

- J.W. Schnarr

The Lethbridge Legion is asking children to come out and be part of a special rededication ceremony on Sunday.

The first Soldier’s Plot will be rededicated by members of the Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch No. 4 beginning at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery.

“We want to pass the torch of Remembrance to the next generation and this is one way to do so,” said Glenn Miller, Lethbridge Legion PR cochair and event organizer in a news release.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

The Soldier’s Plot was officially opened in 1917, and, at that time, the Lethbridge Sir Alexander Galt Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire were asked to be responsible for maintenance and beautification of it.

Upon reaching 120 graves, it was closed in 1945 with the installation of a wrought iron gate and granite post.

Exposure to time and the elements made a restoration necessary, including headstone replacements and replacements of the IODE foot markers.

The event is open to all youth and service groups such as 4H, Girl Guides, Scouts, and Cadets. If any families are planning to attend please contact Miller at 403-360-6076

The IODE will host a reception after the ceremony for the public and share in comradeship at city hall immediately after the ceremony.
