Downtown Farmers’ Market begins July 4

- J.W. Schnarr LETHBRIDGE HERALD

It’s almost Farmers Market season. The 12th annual Downtown Farmers Market will be back beginning July 4. The event is hosted by Lethbridge Exhibition Park and Downtown Lethbridge BRZ, and takes place at Festival Square on 3 Avenue and 6 Street South.

The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Wednesday from July 4 to Sept. 5.

To date, 19 exhibitors have registered to attend the opening of the Wednesday Market. There are 15 returning and four new full-time exhibitors, and casual exhibitors coming to diversify the market each week. More than 700 people attend the Wednesday market weekly.

New handmade exhibitors are still being accepted. Applications also are being taken for the Community Table, which offers a free table to non-profit groups.

There will be one $25 gift certificate draw made each week for a lucky Farmers’ Market visitor.

Exhibition Park marketing manager Doug Kryzanowski said the downtown market got its start as a response to closure of a grocer in the area 12 years ago, and that he is looking forward to more success — as long as the weather holds out.

“We’re looking forward to a great year again,” he said. “We’ve been touched by great weather every year.”

The market is one of two credited Alberta Farmers Market in Lethbridge. The other is the Farmers Market at Exhibition Park that is held on Saturdays from midMay to Oct. 27.

Sheva Boire, marketing director for the Downtown BRZ, said there will be some changes to the experience due to the changes in downtown parking.

“Parking is a little bit different,” she said. “People coming to the market will just need to be wary of what zone they are in so they don’t go over their session.”

Lisa Ludwig, marketing manager for the downtown market, said handmade Alberta products are being sought after.

“We have strict rules,” she said. Eighty per cent of our market has to be handmade, and 20 per cent commercial.”

She said more handmade vendors means more commercial vendors.
