Celebrate Pride Month at the public library

-

This month the Lethbridge Public Library joins Lethbridge Pride Fest Society in celebrating the 10th annual Lethbridge Pride Fest, by hosting a number of events including author talks, a film fest, Pride Wise Owls Pub Quiz, and the monthly Queer Straight Alliance. You’ll also find us walking in the Pride Parade on June 23.

The library is inclusive and welcoming in our space and services. This means that we provide materials and programs that represent a diverse range of people and points of view.

It can be a complex task balancing the many needs of our wide variety of customers, but it is what makes us unique and unmatched in our community. This also means that we are lucky to be able to hear from our customers every day how we have made a difference in their lives, or that of someone they know. Libraries are many things to many people, and, in some cases, the local library is the only resource a person may have available. It is our mission to be a “welcoming, inclusive space that connects and strengthens community through equitable access to learning and leisure.”

We encourage you to take the opportunity and join us for one of the Pride Fest activities we have going on at the library over the course of this month. Take in one of our Wednesday night movies at the Main Branch: “Venus” (June 13), “Outliers” (June 20), and “Suicide Kale” (June 27). Showtime is 7 p.m.

In conjunction with the University of Lethbridge Bookstore and Lethbridge Pride Fest Society, we are also hosting an author talk on June 14 with Canadian author and cartoonist, Sophie Labelle, whose webcomic “Assigned Male” details the experience of Stephie, a young trans girl.

On June 21 all local smarty-pants can head down to Owl Acoustic Lounge for a Pride Wise Owls Pub Quiz at 8 p.m. The evening will include fun trivia with “more rainbows” and a very special co-host.

Finally, on the last Wednesday of every month, the Library in conjunction with The MAT and OUTreach, hosts a Queer Straight Alliance which is open to anyone ages 16–21. On June 27 we’ll be decorating rainbow cupcakes at The Crossings Branch.
