One super comeback

-

Third baseman Dylan Borman tripled to lead off and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.

With the bases loaded and one out, Ankermann singled to left to score Dustin Braun before Hank Forrest singled in Jaret Semeniuk and Jesse Hilyard for a 4-0 lead.

The Giants slowly chipped away at the lead with one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to make it 4-3.

It stayed that way until the eighth when some passed balls and bases-loaded walks gave Fort McMurray their first lead of the game.

Jonathan Lindau drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Mike Bowest single to tie things up at 4-4.

Then with the bases loaded, Bulls reliever Chris Stodolka issued back-to-back walks to give the Giants a 6-4 lead after eight innings.

Cardinal’s day ended in the ninth inning when he walked Jaret and Brett Semeniuk to put runners on first and second with one out.

Giants reliever David Croft came in and loaded the bases with a wild pitch and a walk to Ankermann. Forrest tied the game at 6-6 with a single to right field that scored both Semeniuks.

That set up Roy for the walkoff as the second baseman sent a sharp liner down the first base line to score Ankermann.

“He started me off with a ball off the plate and I was hoping for was that he would put something over the middle and I could do something like I did there,” said Roy of his gamewinner off Giants reliever Matt Vanderschmidt.

Sawyer credited Roy for some late-game antics he’s displayed more than once this season.

“He’s the kind of kid that comes to play every single day. He’s the kind a guy you want up in a big situation like that. He’s done it a few times this year where he’s had a big clutch hit. He came up and did it again today.”

The Bulls coach also credited the rest of his bench for another comeback win.

“We kept grinding it in the ninth-inning we said ‘Let’s find a way to grind one out.’ It makes our off day a whole lot better if we can find a way to get a win,’’ said Sawyer. “I give this team full credit, we haven’t quit all year. We’ve had some big adversity, but this team never quits and we showed it again today.”

“We always find a way to make it interesting,” added Borman. “But the guy on the mound, we pretty much all knew (him). He’s got a good arm. It was a great day for baseball on Superhero Day. We always find a way so it was good.”

The win sends the Bulls into the final week of the regular season on four-game win streak and puts them within striking distance of the Prospects.

The Bulls are in Medicine Hat Tuesday before returning home for four games in four nights.

They play the Okotoks Dawgs Wednesday at 7 p.m. before the Prospects roll into town for a pair Thursday and Friday, also at 7 p.m.

Lethbridge’s last home game of the regular season is Saturday against the Mavericks before wrapping it up Sunday in Okotoks.

“We have another big week ahead of us and our goal was to win the series and we ended up getting to sweep this weekend,” said Sawyer. “It gives us a little bit of breathing room on Fort McMurray and now we can go try and catch Edmonton.”

The Giants outhit the Bulls 11-9.

Forrest was 2-for-5 with three RBI and now has 18 on the season.

Ankermann had the other multi-hit game, batting 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.

Stodolka took the win for Lethbridge, going one and twothirds innings, walking three and striking out two. He is 4-1 this season.

Croft was saddle wiht the loss, while Cardinal threw eight and one-thirds innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out 10.
