The RCMP are investigating a head-on collision near Claresholm which took the lives of two drivers Monday night.

According to the Claresholm RCMP, a black SUV was travelling south in the northbound lane of Highway 2. The black SUV collided with a silver SUV. The Claresholm RCMP along with Fire and EMS responded to the fatal accident approximately six kilometres north of town at about 10:40 p.m.

“This was a head-on collision at what was likely highway speeds,” confirmed Sgt. Greg Stannard of the Claresholm RCMP, “and both drivers were found dead at the scene.”

Stannard said he has no speculation as to why the black SUV was apparently travelling in the wrong lane at the time of the accident. The RCMP’s collision analyst was investigating to determine what happened. Alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the collision, he confirmed.

“We don’t have a lot more details until we can get some more information from our traffic analyst,” said Stannard. “Both men were from out of town, but I have no idea why the accident happened. The weather was fine, there was no rain at the time. It was dark. That’s it. One driver was southbound in the northbound lane.”

It was the second deadly collision in southern Alberta in two days. On Monday morning, two women died following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 519 near Range Road 242.

A Honda Civic was travelling west on the secondary highway and crossed into the eastbound lane before colliding with a GMC Sierra truck. The female driver and passenger of the Honda were pronounced deceased at the scene.
