Comets kick things off with a win
The Raymond Comets football team’s season got off on the right foot.
Raymond’s Drake Still hauled in an interception for a touchdown to open the scoring as the Comets downed St. Albert Bellerose 31-6 in exhibition action Saturday afternoon at Comets Stadium.
Still scampered 43 yards on the pick-six to give Raymond a quick 7-0 lead and the hosts kept the pedal down the rest of the way, opening up a 21-0 lead at the half en route to the win.
After Still’s major, Tanner Maynes put the Comets up 14-0 on a one-yard run.
Still hit paydirt a second time on a three-yard run for a 21-0 lead at the half.
Raymond went up 24-0 in the third quarter on a 32yard field goal from Chase Heggie.
The Comets defence went to work shortly after as St. Albert drove into the red zone, but Raymond linebacker Brady Baines drew a quarterback sack and teammate Nixon Heggie made the recovery for the Comets.
Raymond went up 31-0 in the fourth quarter on a 38 yard touchdown run from Maynes, but Bellerose answered with a six-yard touchdown strike to snub the Comets shutout bid.
Comets quarterbacks Tanner Salmon and Ty Mazutinec each threw for over 100 yards, while Maynes rushed for 94 yards. Ethan Anderson added 56 yards rushing for Raymond.
Still, Tanner Salmon,
and Brady Baines were the Comets leading receivers.
Defensively, Maynes had seven tackles and Anderson and Baines both had six.
Maxwell Archibald and Izaak Long both each had five tackles.
The Comets are back home next Saturday when they host Sherwood Park Salisbury at 1 p.m. at Comets Stadium.
In other exhibition play Saturday, the Pincher Creek Mustangs were defeated 42-0 by Drumheller.
