Golden Hawks net first wins of season

The Lethbridge Val Matteotti bantam AAA Golden Hawks got it done at home and on the road last weekend.

The bantam squad earned its first 2-0 weekend of the Alberta Major Banam Hockey League season thanks to a 7-1 over the St. Albert PAC Saints Saturday at the ATB Centre and a 5-3 win over the Calgary Royals Sunday in Calgary.

The wins put the Golden Hawks at 2-2 on the season.

In Saturday’s home win, the Golden Hawks scored twice in the first and second period and three more in the third for their first win of the season as Peyton Twigg scored once and added four assists for a five-point afternoon.

Rylen Roersma scored twice and added two assists for Lethbridge, while Brett Lambert, John Szabo, Caden Heins and Emanual Hudson added one each.

Heins had two assists for three points, Szabo had an assist for two points and Jed Magarrell added two helpers.

Golden Hawks goaltender Ty Young made 37 saves.

On Sunday in Calgary, Lethbridge opened up a 4-0 lead after the first period on goals from Layne Loomer, Twigg, Roersma and Zach Rajcic.

Szabo added the other Golden Hawks goal in the second period and added an assist for two points.

Rajcic also had an assist for two points.

Spencer Borsos had a busy afternoon in goal with 46 saves, including 18 in the third period.

The Golden Hawks are on the road this weekend as they head to Medicine Hat to take on the Southeast Tigers on Saturday.

They return home Oct. 13 when the Red Deer Rebels pay a visit to Nicholas Sheran Arena.
