Horns women’s basketball coach taking medical leave from team

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD

After joining the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team three years ago, associate head coach Dave Waknuk is taking over the bench.

The Pronghorns announced Wednesday head coach Dave Adams will be taking a medical leave from the team and that Waknuk has been named interim head coach moving forward.

While training for World Triathlon Championship Adams had a crash during road bike training, sustaining injuries that will require several surgeries and due to the rehab time required, will not be able to coach for a period of time.

“I am proud of the accomplishments a season ago and we are off to a good start this year in non-conference play,” said Adams in a release. “I have full confidence in Dave’s ability to lead the program in the interim.”

Waknuk, joined the Pronghorns as a full-time assistant coach in the fall of 2015 and has 14 years of postsecondary coaching experience.

Prior to coming to the Horns Waknuk was the head coach of the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference and was recently the head coach of the U17 Alberta team.

He was also named the ACAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 2011, leading the Wolves to an ACAC championship.

The Pronghorns will open the 2018-19 Canada West season Nov. 2 when they host the MacEwan Griffins.
