Cardston rolls to football win; Myers captures B Division title

Cardston Cougars struck for four second-quarter touchdowns en route to a 43-0 victory over the Winston Churchill Bulldogs in Southern Alberta High School Football League A Division play Thursday night at University of Lethbridge Community Stadium.

The teams battled through a scoreless first quarter, but Cougars broke through on their first possession of the second quarter as quarterbac­k Ty Schaffer hit Rhett Lewis with a 19-yard touchdown pass.

Taylor Barfuss then struck paydirt from six yards out before Schaffer connected through the air once again, finding Barfuss with a 20-yard TD strike.

Cougars closed out the half with a oneyard TD plunge by Schaffer.

Cardston added another major in the third quarter on a one-yard TD run by Briley Heninger.

In the fourth quarter, Cougars rounded out the scoring as backup quarterbac­k Rhett Nish hit Kody Janisko with a 19-yard TD pass.

Austen Olsen converted five of the Cougars’ touchdowns and Heninger added a two-point convert.

The win improves the Cougars’ division record to 1-1 while the Bulldogs drop to 03.

In B Division play in Taber, host W.R. Myers Rebels locked up the division title and Jerry Dawson Trophy with a 36-14 victory over Claresholm Willow Creek Cobras for their second title in three years. Myers, the top-ranked Tier IV team in the province, improves to 3-0 with the win while the defending provincial champion Cobras are 1-1.

Action resumes tonight at U of L Stadium with the Pincher Creek Mustangs playing Strathmore in an exhibition contest at 4:30 p.m. The game was originally set for Pincher Creek, but moved to U of L due to the snowfall in Pincher. At 7 p.m. the LCI Rams take on the Catholic Central Cougars in an A Division battle.
