Kodiaks men’s soccer finds some twine

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

It was the offensive outburst the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s soccer team needed.

The Kodiaks found the back of the net in abundance in a 61 win over the Ambrose College Lions in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at the Servus Sports Centre.

The win not only gives the Kodiaks three key points in their playoff race in some finally-ideal fall weather Saturday, the win that improves the Kodiaks to 4-3-1 also kicked-started a bit of finish around the net.

They needed that,” said Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey, whose team moves into a tie for third in the ACAC South Division with the Medicine Hat Rattlers, who they’ll play today at 2 p.m. at the Servus Sports Centre. “They needed to break out a little bit offensively. Those are three points we have to have in the running for the season. We know that everybody else is keeping track and keeping pace. So that’s a team we knew we had to beat and it helps with our goal average, too. That’s key. It could come down to goals at the end of the season. So we needed that to kind of get the guys going and get some confidence back in the team and build for a big game tomorrow.”

Kodiaks captain Ben Knight and Jimmy Bukuru each scored twice Saturday, while Wilson Ntignee and Taylor Laviolette added the other Lethbridge goals.

Knight added two assists for a four-point afternoon, while Ntignee and Laviolette each had an assist.

In goal, Kohl Wandyka turned aside five of six shots.

“We didn’t have a good weekend last weekend,” said Carey of the team’s 11 showing. “So we wanted to put that behind us and

move forward for this weekend. You know what? They came through. They answered the call. Even when we conceded ago and it was back to 1-1, the guys’ heads didn’t go down and they got the goal right back again, a nice finish from Ben from the free kick and we just built from that.”

The Kodiaks will look to build further today when the Rattlers roll into town for what is shaping up to be a heated battle for third in the South.

The teams tied 1-1 in their first meeting earlier in the season.
