Women’s win not their best

- Dale Woodard LETHBRIDGE HERALD

First the good news for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s soccer team, they picked up three crucial points they needed.

The bad news? It wasn’t their finest 90 minutes as the Kodiaks nonetheless managed a 3-1 win over the Ambrose Lions in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at the Servus Sports Centre.

The win moves the Kodiaks to 4-3-1 and into a tie with the Olds Broncos for third place in the ACAC South Division, which is also the final playoff spot.

Still, it wasn’t exactly one for the highlight reel.

“The girls didn’t play their best game today,” said Kodiaks head coach Sean Carey. “We were a little disappointed with the way the girls played. They scrambled at the end and managed to get three points, good teams find ways of winning games when they don’t play well. There were a couple of timely goals at the very end to get the three points.”

The Kodiaks took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game as Sydney Hope got things rolling for the hosts.

It stayed that way until later in the second half when the Lions struck for the equalizer in the 77th minute.

Fortunately, the Kodiaks were able to answer back 10 minutes later as Tansy Nicol hit for the game-winner in the 87th minute before Vicky Noronha added an insurance marker a little under three minutes later.

But the Lions — coming into their first year of soccer in the ACAC — made the Kodiaks earn it.

“To be honest with you, Ambrose played really well and I can’t take anything away from them,” said Carey. “They didn’t allow us to play our game and good for them. We tried to tell the girls that is a good team we’re playing today. I think they just came in a little bit too cocky and I said to their coach after the game that they deserved something out of that game and we didn’t deserve to take three points, but we’ll always take them.”

Brittany Klein earned the win in goal for Lethbridge with two stops.

The Kodiaks have a chance to take over sole possession of third place in the only ACAC game today when the Medicine Hat Rattlers (1-6-1) pay a visit to the Servus Sports Centre at noon.
