Lightning open season with victories

The Lethbridge Lightning senior men’s hockey team struck for a pair of wins to start the Ranchland Hockey League season.

The Lightning downed the Piikani Regulators 16-2 Friday night in Brocket Friday and returned home Sunday for a 5-4 shootout win over the Fort Macleod Mustangs.

On Friday night, Shay Wirll had three goals and three assists for the Lightning and Laramie Kostelansk­y added two goals and four assists.

James Price had one goal and four assists and Justice Taylor had two goals and two assists.

Cole Matson had two goals and one assist, Ben Bohle added a pair of goals and Nicholas Mottl had one goal and one assist.

Jay Hitchcock, Nic Bohle and Dallas Weber had the other Lethbridge goals.

Devery Edmonds had two assists and Lightning goaltender Cole Schafer earned the win.

On Sunday against the Mustangs, Price scored twice in regulation. Matson and Edmonds had the other Lethbridge goals.

Price scored the lone goal in the shootout. Goaltender Alex Sirard stopped 20 shots including all three Mustangs attempts in the shootout.

Leo Lacourcier­e, Rylan Vernal, Tyson Thomson and Josh Campbell scored for Fort Macleod.

The Lightning take on the Siksika Buffaloes Friday at the Siksika Deerfoot Sportsplex and return home Nov. 10 when they host the Kainai Braves at 8:30 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
