LCI dominates at cross country finals

The Lethbridge Collegiate Institute cross country team successful­ly defended its 3A title at the 50th annual Alberta Schools Athletic Associatio­n Championsh­ips last weekend in Vermillion.

LCI took a team of 24 athletes who amassed a total of 1,785 points to win the 3A provincial banner for the second year in a row, beating the second-place school by more than 400 points.

LCI’s effort was led by Owen Stewart, who won the junior boys provincial bronze over four kilometres, with teammates Hayden Thomas in fifth and Carter Van Roon eighth. Starting the race in 15th position after the first kilometre, the trio worked together to pull in the rest of the field, passing five athletes in the final kilometre.

Courtlynd Cherpin placed ninth in the Junior Girls four-km race — the most competitiv­e race of the day. Berkley Heggie and Abbie Hall participat­ed in their third consecutiv­e provincial championsh­ip race, joined by teammates Avery Edwards, Brinley Thomas, Savannah Muise and Mackenzie Ash.

The Senior boys competing for LCI at provincial­s were Jackson Fletcher and Cole Hyggen.

Rounding out the team were Mercy Trinh, Kya Bester, Hannah Stewart, Sophie Strong, Hadley Selk, Kennedy Tanner, Chanelle Olsen and Aspen Cook (Intermedia­te Girls); Ritch Jacklyn (Intermedia­te Boys); and Carter Lewis, Josh Dub lanko and Will Ash ( Jr Boys ).
