Cougars open season with convincing victory

Cardston Cougars defeated the Winston Churchill Griffins 98-15 in Southern Alberta Girls Basketball League opening-night play on Wednesday at Churchill.

Madison Leishman led the Cougar attack with 20 points while Hanna Nunn added 16. Madison Barfuss and Lauren Wolsey chipped in with 14 and 13 points respective­ly.

Tina Liu replied with seven points for the Griffins.

In junior varsity play, Cardston topped Churchill 74-31 as Shaelee Wright led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points, followed by Tylor Merrill and Kiera Hinch with 12 apiece.

Cayla Stimson led all scorers with 17 points in a losing cause.

In a lone JV contest, Magrath outlasted Chinook 50-41 as Macie Wocknitz dropped in 16 points and Carly Blackmore added 13.

Takeo Uyesugi led Chinook with eight points and Reesa Keller added seven.

In play Tuesday, the LCI Clippers defeated the Catholic Central Cougars 72-38 as Annah Westrop led the winners with 13 points while Berkley Heggie and Renae Czurka added 10 apiece.

Ashley Sazalski replied with 11 points for the Cougars while Alissa Crawford and Jordan Goruk added 10 each.

In the JV contest, LCI topped CCH 91-60 as Emily Hall hit for 16 points, followed by Hadley Selk and Kwynci Mclachlan with 13 apiece with Abbey Pallett with 12.

Claire Talbot replied with 14 for CCH and Aimee Baron added 10.
