Overwater, Anderson win Pronghorn honours

-

The University of Lethbridge Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Male Athlete of the Week was a slam dunk, while this week’s female choice shut out the rest of the competition.

Earning the Male Athlete of the Week honour is Horns baskeball player Zac Overwater, while Pronghorns women’s hockey goaltender Alicia Anderson get the nod as the Female Athlete of the Week.

With the Pronghorns stuck on a six-game losing streak after starting the season 4-0, Overwater — a fifth-year guard — came up clutch with back-to-back double doubles, leading Lethbridge to a key sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies in Canada West action Friday and Saturday in Saskatoon.

In the weekend opener, Overwater led all scorers with 32 points on 13-for-19 shooting, while hauling in 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals in a 9789 win.

The points kept coming Saturday as Overwater drained 25 points and added 10 more rebounds to help the Pronghorns to their first sweep in Saskatoon since 1998.

The weekend totals also earned him the Canada West Male Second Star of the Week award.

This season, Overwater leads the Pronghorns averaging 18.3 points and 7.9 rebounds.

The Pronghorns take on the Mount Royal Cougars in a home-and-home series this weekend, beginning tonight in Calgary.

Anderson stopped 40 of the 43 shots she faced to lead the Pronghorns to a road spilt with the Regina Cougars.

In the opener Friday, Anderson stopped all 27 shots she faced as the Horns downed the Cougars 1-0. It was her fifth shutout of the season, tying her for the conference lead.

On Saturday, Anderson put up another 23 saves, but the Cougars prevailed with a 3-2 win as the Horns sit at 5-11-02 on the season. That puts the team in seventh place in the Canada West, seven points behind the Mount Royal University Cougars, who hold down the final playoff spot.

Anderson has a 1.90 goalsagainst average this season and a 0.943 save percentage while leading Canada West in total saves with 494.

The Pronghorns face the Calgary Dinos in a home-andhome series this weekend starting Friday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena at 7 p.m.
