Card­ston boys down Ma­grath

The Card­ston Cougars have moved into a tie for first in the South­ern Al­berta High School Bas­ket­ball League.

The Cougars de­feated the Ma­grath Zeniths 76-55 Satur­day night in Ma­grath.

The win puts Card­ston at 5-0 and into a tie for first place with the 5-0 Medicine Hat Mo­hawks, who were tak­ing part in this week­end’s LCI Green and Gold Tour­na­ment.

Lead­ing the Cougars was Bryn Nel­son with 20 points, while Mike Olsen and Tay­lor Bar­fuss had 18 and 17 points, re­spec­tively. Tris­ten In­fanti hit for 10 points for Card­ston. For the Zeniths (0-5) Mac Strong led the way with 12 points and Ma­son Stock and Cody Tollestrup each had 10.

The Wild­cats won the junor var­sity game 96-54 as Grae­don Wood­ward and Rhett Lewis each scored 19 points.

Kody Janisko, Braxen Scott and McCoy Duce added 15, 14 and 13 points, re­spec­tively, for Card­ston. Strong had 14 points for Ma­grath. In girls play Satur­day af­ter­noon, the Ma­grath Pan­das de­feated the Win­ston Churchill Griffins 96-19 at Win­ston Churchill to im­prove to 4-0 and into sec­ond place in the league.

Mon­tana Berezay struck for 21 points for the Pan­das and El­lie Wilde had 15.

Lucy Wilde added 12 points for Ma­grath and Lau­ren Payne had 10. Ash­ley Na had six points for the 0-5 Griffins. In the ju­nior var­sity game the Pan­das won 74-40 as Ma­cie Wock­nitz had a 21-point af­ter­noon.

Mandy McMa­hon scored 14 points and Carly Black­more chipped in with 11.

For the Griffins, Cayla Stim­son had 14 points and Grace Hatch drained 10.
