Cardston boys down Magrath

The Cardston Cougars have moved into a tie for first in the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League.

The Cougars defeated the Magrath Zeniths 76-55 Saturday night in Magrath.

The win puts Cardston at 5-0 and into a tie for first place with the 5-0 Medicine Hat Mohawks, who were taking part in this weekend’s LCI Green and Gold Tournament.

Leading the Cougars was Bryn Nelson with 20 points, while Mike Olsen and Taylor Barfuss had 18 and 17 points, respective­ly. Tristen Infanti hit for 10 points for Cardston. For the Zeniths (0-5) Mac Strong led the way with 12 points and Mason Stock and Cody Tollestrup each had 10.

The Wildcats won the junor varsity game 96-54 as Graedon Woodward and Rhett Lewis each scored 19 points.

Kody Janisko, Braxen Scott and McCoy Duce added 15, 14 and 13 points, respective­ly, for Cardston. Strong had 14 points for Magrath. In girls play Saturday afternoon, the Magrath Pandas defeated the Winston Churchill Griffins 96-19 at Winston Churchill to improve to 4-0 and into second place in the league.

Montana Berezay struck for 21 points for the Pandas and Ellie Wilde had 15.

Lucy Wilde added 12 points for Magrath and Lauren Payne had 10. Ashley Na had six points for the 0-5 Griffins. In the junior varsity game the Pandas won 74-40 as Macie Wocknitz had a 21-point afternoon.

Mandy McMahon scored 14 points and Carly Blackmore chipped in with 11.

For the Griffins, Cayla Stimson had 14 points and Grace Hatch drained 10.
