The with Canada West Championships around the corner, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns track and field team has snagged the spotlight as the Horns announced its Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week Monday.

Earning this week’s female honour is Sandra Latrace, while Ben Ingvaldson takes home the men’s honour.

Competing at the Bison Classic last weekend in Winnipeg, Latrace won both her events, taking top spot in the 60-metre dash and long jump.

In the 60m dash, Latrace finished first in the preliminary heats with the fastest time of 7.56 seconds and clocked a time of 7.53 in the final to win her second gold in as many meets.

The reigning U SPORTS gold medallist in the long jump put up a distance of 5.76 metres to win the event by more than 35 centimetres.

Ingvaldson, the defending Canada West champion and reigning U SPORTS Male Field Athlete of the Year, claimed two more throwing medals in Winnipeg last weekend.

The product of Surrey, B.C. topped the podium in the shot put with the longest throw of 15.23 metres, more than a metre farther than teammate Greg McCarthy. Ingvaldson had the four longest throws in the entire competition.

He followed up that performance with a bronze medal in the weight throw, finishing just behind teammate Andreas Troschke with a throw of 16.79 metres. Pronghorn throwers claimed five of six podium spots in the two throwing events.

The Pronghorns are off to Edmonton this weekend for the Panda Classic at the University of Alberta.

The Canada West Championships, also in Edmonton, are Feb. 22-23.
