After 30 years of assisting students with job opportunities in September, the University of Lethbridge launched its first spring job fair this week to give students an opportunity to meet one-on-one with employers or summer jobs.

In the fall, students at the career fair tend to be more focused on networking and learning more about opportunities for the future, while the spring job fair helps set them up with employment following the end of the semester.

“Today we have over 70 employers that have come on campus to connect with students and the focus of this fair, we always have a September career fair, but the focus of this fair is around the focus of summer jobs for our students,” said Jennifer EllisToddington, Manager of Counselling for Career Services at the U of L, during the event Wednesday.

“It is a great opportunity for students to connect with employers but also for employers to hire out of an amazing pool of employees, and our students are great employees to be hiring.”

Employment opportunities in almost every industry were on display, including representatives from the agriculture industry, school districts, banking, local municipalities, construction and for the new Cor Van Raay YMCA at ATB Centre opening this summer.

“Students are coming to not only have personal development, but ultimately to enter into the workforce,” said Ellis-Toddington. “The more experiences they can collect, the more employable they will be down the road, and that includes summer work experiences, and for them to use that experience to leverage them into the job market when they are ready to graduate.”

Hundreds of students took advantage of the new opportunity provided by the U of L to find some career paths and other opportunities for the summer. Students were also able to get their headshot taken and LinkedIn account set up with the help of staff at the job fair.
