• Travel Adventures, an ongoing series presented by the Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society, will feature “Cape to Cape: 52 Days at Sea on Europa,” with John Nightingale, Feb. 8 from 2-3 p.m. at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Community Room. Find out what life is like on board Europa, a 56-metre-tall sailing ship, in the vast and unpredictable Southern Ocean toward Antarctica and beyond — departing from Ushuaia, Argentina, sailing through the Beagle Channel, negotiating the infamous Drake Passage en route to the Antarctic Peninsula, and finally crossing the southern Atlantic Ocean, via South Georgia and Tristan Da Cunah to Cape Town, South Africa. Everyone is welcome to attend and admission is by donation. Proceeds from the events will go toward the Outdoor Learning Classroom and Amphitheatre project which will replace the Nature Centre’s aging amphitheatre. • Pizza & Pasta Night will be held Feb. 8 at the Italian Canadian Club, 1511 St. Edward Blvd. N., featuring a buffet of pizzas, pastas, salads and dessert. $18 dine in or take out (takeout starts same time as dinner). $9 kids 12 years and under. • U of L Opera Workshop will present “Candide” Feb. 8 and 9, 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Southminster United Church. Everyone is invited to attend this operetta, produced in collaboration with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. Comedy and tragedy combine in this hilarious farce written by Leonard Bernstein. Tickets start at $25, but audience members aged 13 to 29 are given discounts with an Access Pass, and those under 12 get the children’s rate when accompanied by an adult. org) and at the Westminster Hall kiosk off 11 Street South. • Growing Abilities is a parent support and play group for children with differing abilities. It is open to parents/caregivers and their children with disabilities, as well as siblings and support staff. There will be planned activities based on children’s developmental needs, abilities and interests. There will also be open-ended activities for siblings and space for parents to connect. This group will be facilitated by an Early Childhood Educator and a Parent Educator, so one-on-one support is not available to children. Give it a try at Family Centre Downtown on Fridays from 2-3:30 p.m. at #225, 200 4 Ave. S. The program is free but people are asked to register by calling 403-320-4232. • TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a non-profit organization which provides support to people wanting to lose weight, meets regularly in Lethbridge and area.
