The students and staff of Gilbert Paterson Middle School Fine Arts are presenting “Sherlock Holmes: Adapted by Tim Kelly.”

Since the beginning of the school year, students have been working on learning the characters and lines of the mystery story, filled with humour, drama and a creative set put together by the students. The story follows Sherlock Holmes who discovers mysterious letters, which are worth a lot of money due to an untimely death.

“This is Sherlock Holmes, it is a show that was written specifically for this stage, story of Sherlock and his villain friends and how they are going through life at this point in the 1890s,” said director Lisa Giannetti. “We started working on this the second week of school, in the second week of September, we did three weeks of casting and we have been rehearsing every week, twice a week, since and now we are almost ready to show friends and family.”

More than 60 students were involved in the production, with a double cast and a large crew to design the stage, costumes and effects to make the story of Sherlock Holmes come to life. Giannetti says that without the students the play wouldn’t be as wonderful and passionate as it is.

“The kids have been super involved, this year we were able to get more students involved for back stage so having them be a little more creative in costumes and painting sets and set pieces and having their input for the different sounds and light cues, it is super important and they have brought a lot to it,” says Giannetti. “Our actors, they have brought a lot to their characters. With the double casting it is two very different shows, so depending on the night that people come, the show will be a bit different because the actors brought that life to those characters.”

The Gilbert Paterson Middle School adaptation of “Sherlock Holmes” runs from Monday to Thursday at 7 p.m. each night, with student performances running the same dates in the afternoon at 12:30 p.m. To purchase tickets for the show, visit SchoolCashOnline.com.
