Pronghorns men’s hockey wraps up the regular season with a bang

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s hockey team wrapped up the Canada West regular season on a winning note.

The Horns defeated the Mount Royal College Cougars 6-2 Saturday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena to end the regular portion of the 2018-19 campaign at 9-17-2.

That completes the regular season for the Horns and now sets them up for the second season as Lethbridge heads to Calgary to face the Calgary Dinos in the best-of-three quarter-finals starting Friday.

Meanwhile, the Pronghorns women also capped off their season Saturday night in Calgary, losing 6-2 to the Royals after a 2-0 shutout loss Friday at Nicholas Sheran Arena. With the losses the Horns complete their season at 6-17-1-4 and in seventh place, missing a post-season spot.

On Friday at Nicholas Sheran Arena, the Horns men went out with some offensive flair with two goals in the first and three more in the second to end on a victorious note.

Torrin White and Brooks Maxwell scored for Lethbridge in the first period before Landon Gross — on the power play — Dalton Sward and Derek Brown added second period goals.

Brooks Maxwell added his second of the game in the third to round out the scoring.

Brown added three assists for a four-point night and Sward added one assist for two points.

Russell Maxwell added three helpers in the winning cause.

Taz Burman earned the win for the Pronghorns, stopping 35 of 37 shots.

On Friday in Calgary, the Cougars snapped a 2-2 tie after the second period with three third-period goals to earn the home win.

Gross and Justin Valentino on a man advantage marker scored for Lethbridge in the second period. Both Horns goal scorers also added an assist for a two-point night, while goaltender Garret Hughson kicked out 14 of 18 shots.

In the women’s game in Calgary Saturday night, Katelyn Breitkreuz and Alli Borrow scored for the Pronghorns in the first period for a 2-2 tie after 20 minutes.

The Cougars scored twice in the second and third periods to seal the win.

Pronghorns goaltender Jessica Lohues made 18 saves in the loss.

On Friday at Nicholas Sheran Arena, Mount Royal scored once each in the first and second periods to post the shutout win. Lohues made 19 saves. The Horns men’s quarterfin­al starts Friday with all three games, if necessary, in Calgary.

Game 1 is 7 p.m. with Game 2 slated for Saturday at 6 p.m.

If necessary, Game 3 is slated for Sunday at 6 p.m.
