Headwater Canes snag six points

A busy weekend didn’t stop the Lethbridge minor midget Headwater Hurricanes from picking up six points.

The Canes downed the Calgary NWCAA Stamps 7-3 Sunday afternoon in Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League play, capping off a 3-0 weekend that included a pair of road wins.

On Friday night, the Hurricanes downed the Medicine Hat SEAC Tigers 4-2 and then travelled to Calgary Saturday, where they topped the CRAA Blue 5-3.

The three wins move the Canes to 23-3-2 and four points ahead of the Red Deer North Star Chiefs for first in the South Division. That also puts them three points behind the PAC Saints (24-3-3) for first overall in the league.

Rylan Bruns and Carter DeBoer each scored twice for Lethbridge in Sunday’s win.

Koden Lazar, Syprus Ives and Colin McLeod added singles for the Hurricanes.

Brody Tallman registered four assists in Sunday’s win and Colby Garner added three.

McLeod had an assist for a two-point game and Kyran Gromnisky had two helpers.

Marek Andres stopped 26 shots in the win.

On Friday in Medicine Hat, Bruns scored twice for Lethbridge, while Koden Lazar and Tyson Perkins added one each.

Perkins added an assist for two points and Wyatt Broderson had two assists. Andres stopped 17 shots. Colby Garner led the Hurricanes Saturday in Calgary with the hat trick and Tallman had four assists.

Conner Furukawa and Bruns scored the other Hurricanes goals. Bruns put up two assists for a three-point game.

Andres stopped 30 shots to earn the win.

The Hurricanes continue a busy month this weekend with a pair of games in Calgary.

They play the CNHA Blazers (6-22-1) Saturday at 5:15 p.m. and on Sunday face the CBHA Blackhawks (11-13-5) at 4:45 p.m.
