Midget Hurricanes stay in first in AMHL

The Lethbridge midget AAA Hurricanes fell just short of their league-leading 25th victory of the Alberta Midget Hockey League season last weekend.

Finishing a two-game home stand, the Hurricanes were downed 5-3 by the Calgary Northstars Sunday afternoon at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

The Canes still remain in first place in the AMHL at 247-1.

The Calgary Buffaloes remain two points back at 227-3.

The midget AAA squad started the weekend with a convincing win and a shutout courtesy a 9-0 whitewashi­ng of the Edmonton SSAC Boston Pizza Athletics.

On Sunday, Zack Stringer, Levi Young and Dylan Nevil scored for Lethbridge. Nevil and Young also had an assist for two points.

Cole Tisdale was in goal for the loss.

Brayden Peters stopped 31 shots for his league-leading fifth shutout, while nine different players supplied the goals in Saturday’s win.

Tayler Miller, Ethan Klemen, Levi Young, Michael Horon, Tristan Kimmen, Griffen Fraser, Zack Stringer, Derrien Tonin and Carson Haynes scored for Lethbridge.

Fraser chipped in with three assists for a four-point afternoon and Kimmen and Miller added two assists for three points.

Cale Lyons had two assists. Stringer, Young, Horon and Haynes had one assist for two points

Dawson Leroux added three helpers.

The Canes get set for a battle of the top two teams in the AMHL when they travel to Calgary Wednesday to take on the Buffaloes.

The team wraps up the regular season Saturday when they host the Airdrie CFR Bisons at 3 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
