Pandas win Panda Classic

The Magrath Pandas were tournament hosts as well as tournament champions.

The Pandas earned the gold medal in this year’s Magrath Panda Classic Basketball Tournament Saturday night in Magrath.

Lauren Payne led Magrath with a 20-point night as the Pandas defeated the Cardston Cougars 74-31.

Jenna Taylor added 15 points for the Pandas and Lucy Wilde had 13

Hanna Nunn and Madison Barfuss each had eight points for Cardston.

The Pandas defeated the Stirling Lakers 78-40 in the semifinal.

Montana Berezay topped Magrath with 23 points and Wilde chipped in with 14.

Sadie Nelson scored 20 points for the Lakers and Savannah McKee had 13.

Cardston downed the Okotoks Foothills Falcons 80-46 in the other semifinal as Nunn led the way with 24 points and Madison Leishman scored 15.

Victoria Want put up 13 points for Foothills and Baker had a 12-point night.

Foothills won the bronze medal with an 85-62 win over the Lakers.

Baker paced Calgary with 24 points and Want added 12.

McKee drained 25 points for Stirling and Sadie Nelson scored 16.

In the consolatio­n final, the LCI Clippers beat the Catholic Central Cougars 89-44.

Avery Edwards, Bailey Kutsch and Kennedy Tanner had 16, 14 and 13 points, respective­ly, for the Clippers.

Kyra Collier led the Cougars with 15 points and Hailey Schneider added eight.

LCI beat Cranbrook Mount Baker Wild 78-50 in the consolatio­n semifinal as Berkley Heggie and Tanner each had 13 points.

For Mount Baker, Kyaira Ker scored 16 points and Josee Mackie added 15.

In the other consolatio­n final, the Cougars beat the Monseigneu­r McCoy Colts 64-62.

Collier led Catholic Central with 23 points and teammate Chloe Bevans scored 11.

Bajien Jul had 16 points for Monseigneu­r McCoy and Halle Gjerlaug added 10.

The tournament kicked off Friday with the Lakers topping Catholic Central 77-64 as McKee had a 32-point game for Stirling and Nelson had 26.

Collier led Catholic Central with 25 points. Jordan Goruk chipped in with 18.

In the second game Cardston defeated Mount Baker Wild 82-49.

Madison Leishman and Jill Leishman had 25 and 14 points, respective­ly, for Cardston.

Ashley Giesbrecht topped the Wild with 15 and Kiara Ker scored 10.

The Falcons edged the Clippers 62-60 in the third game.

Baker had 25 points for Okotoks and Hallie Dunham added 12.

Heggie led LCI with an 18-point outing. Kyra Bester scored 12.

The Pandas wrapped up Friday’s play with an 81-49 win over the Colts as Payne scored 22 points.

Taylor drained 18 points for Magrath and Lucy Wilde contribued 14.

Kassidy Rae scored seven points for the Colts and Mackenzie Park had six.

Lauren was named the tournament Offensive MVP and Wilde was selected as the Defensive MVP.

The tournament all-stars were Heggie (LCI), Baker (Foothills), McKee (Stirling), Nunn (Cardston) and Leishman (Cardston).
