Lightning pushing for first place

The Lethbridge Lightning strengthen­ed their hold on second place in the Ranchland Hockey League and put themselves in the race for first as well.

The Lightning were 2-0 at home last weekend, downing the Piikani Broncs 12-1 Friday night at Nicholas Sheran Arena before posting a 6-3 win over the Siksika Buffaloes Saturday night, also at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

The wins improve the Lightning to 15-3-0-0, six points up on the 11-5-0-2 Siksika Buffaloes and two points back of the league-leading Nanton Palominos (15-1-0-2).

On Friday, the Broncs struck first on a goal from Dallas Young Pine, but the Lightning took over the scoresheet after that.

James Price, Cole Matson and Cam Hurt each scored twice for Lethbridge while Devery Edmonds, Shane Eyre, Brady Matson, Ashton Zintel, Dallas Weber and Calvin Swanson added one each.

Price added three assists for a five-point night. Hurt, Matson and Weber chipped in with an assist each for three points.

Carson Bolduc had five assists and Eyre and Matson each had an assist for a two-point night.

Dayn Opel and Nic Bohle added two assists each.

Alex Sirard earned the win in goal for the Lightning.

Bolduc scored twice and added an assist for Lethbridge in Saturday’s win.

Shay Wirll, Zintel, Weber and Laramie Kostelansk­y added singles for the Lightning.

Price had two assists for Lethbridge and Cole Schafer stopped 49 of 52 shots.

Brooker Pretty Young Man scored twice and had an assist for the Buffaloes. Darian Henry scored the other Siksika goal.

The Lightning play their final two games of the regular season this weekend.

They’re in Nanton Friday to clash with the Palominos and return home to host the Fort Macleod Mustangs Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
