Bulls, Nikka Yuko teaming up for double play
Taste of Japan coming to Bulls baseball games
Local Japanese Canadians have always loved the game of baseball, says Nikka Yuko marketing and events manager Melanie Berdusco, so it makes sense for the Japanese Garden to partner with the Lethbridge Bulls to bring a little
taste of Japan to their home ball games this season.
“We’re excited to add a Japanese flair to the Bulls games through the addition of the Yakyu Special, which gives people a chance to visit the garden and then go to a Bulls game. And then they also get to try a special Yakyu hotdog, which is a Japanese-style hotdog.”
The Yakyu hotdog is topped with Japanese mayonnaise, dried seaweed and wasabi sauce.
“It is something different people can try,” says Berdusco, “and I know the Lethbridge Bulls are adding to their concessions; so it is just something cool they can try when they go to the game.”
Besides the Yakyu Special, the Nikka Yuko Garden will be hosting a “Meet the Bulls” session on May 30 from 3-4 p.m., and will be sponsoring a Bulls game Japanese theme night on July 14. The sponsored game night will include activities like sumo suit wrestling and other activities with a Japanese touch. Nikka Yuko mascot Tomo and the Bulls mascot T-Bone will also be working the crowd together on July 14 to bring maximum entertainment value.
“Baseball is popular (in the local Japanese community),” says Berdusco, “and it is something that has always brought them together. So it made sense to create this partnership and learn this story by coming and seeing our exhibit ‘Sugar Beets and Shortstops,’ visiting the garden, and then taking in a Lethbridge Bulls game.”
