Man pleads guilty to voyeurism

A former University of Lethbridge student could be sentenced later this year for breaking into the residence of two female friends and videoing one of them in the shower.

Edlouie Masongsong pleaded guilty Tuesday in Lethbridge provincial court to one count each of voyeurism and housebreaking to commit an indictable offence.

Court was told the 23-year-old man was visiting in the residence last March when one of the women noticed a picture of the other woman’s bedroom on Masongsong’s cellphone. The accused claimed the picture was taken by accident. The other woman also received an alert on her phone that someone was trying to gain access to her Facebook account, and when she questioned him about it, he left.

While the two women discussed the incidents, they heard a noise and discovered Masongsong had returned, entered the house without their permission and eavesdropped on their conversation. He apologized and ran away.

After he left, the women checked a laptop computer Masongsong had been using while he was in the residence and noticed his email was still open and he had sent himself a video of one of the women showering.

Crown prosecutor Dawn Janecke explained Masongsong had become obsessed with one of the women and set up a hidden camera in the bathroom.

Lethbridge lawyer Tracy Hembroff told court her client, who now lives in Edmonton, is “extremely contrite.” She requested a presentence report, which will provide the judge with personal information about the accused to help determine a fit sentence.

Court was told the PSR will take several weeks to complete and the matter was adjourned to Dec. 3.
