Pronghorns name athletes of the week
Ellis Davies and Savanna Collision have been named The Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sept. 8.
Following a season-ending injury to captain Marcus Menzies, third-year Pronghorn Davies stepped in to lead the men’s soccer team and was a key contributor to the Pronghorns coming from a goal down to tie the Saskatchewan Huskies 1-1 Saturday, in the team’s only action last weekend.
Defensively, Davies was a key factor in limiting the Huskies’ attack, individually breaking up the Huskie offensive pushes before they were able to even attempt shots.
Offensively, the Calgary product pushed the ball up in transition and led the Pronghorns set pieces, placing multiple dangerous balls into the Huskies penalty area and recording one shot on goal.
The men’s soccer team travels to face Trinity Western Spartans and UBC Thunderbirds this weekend.
In a convincing seasonopening win for the Pronghorn women’s rugby team, fourth-year prop Collison had a significant hand in a 27-0 win over the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton.
In addition to scoring a try, Collison was able to engage the Pandas’ frontline and either manipulated them with passing or dominated them in contact and offloaded to keep the Alberta defence guessing. Collision was also solid defensively, delivering several big tackles that resulted in Panda turnovers.
The Pronghorns are off this coming weekend but return to action Sept. 21 to host the Calgary Dinos for the 2019 Pronghorn home opener.
