Kodiaks and Rattlers to tangle in basketball, volleyball

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks and Medicine Hat Rattlers men’s and women’s volleyball teams will serve up a Highway 3 rivalry this weekend.

The Kodiaks host the Rattlers tonight in Alberta Colleges Athletic Association play at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium. The women’s game is at 6 p.m. with men to follow at 8 p.m.

The teams head to Medicine Hat Saturday night.

In basketball, the Kodiaks have one game on the slate as they host the Rattlers Saturday at 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men.

In volleyball, the Kodiak men ride a three-game winning streak that puts them at 3-1 and in a logjam in the early race for first in the ACAC South Division. The Rattlers are 1-5 to start.

Carter Hansen had 33 kills last weekend and is just 70 kills away from the all-time ACAC record. He is eighth in the conference in kills per set, averaging 3.14.

The Kodiaks women’s volleyball team is coming off a split in Olds last weekend and are 2-2 and in a three-way tie for third place in the South Division.

Lethbridge’s Rae Whitehead and Claire Armstrong are first and third, respectively, in blocks per set in the ACAC.

In basketball, the 4-0 men’s team looks to keep it rolling against the 1-3 Rattlers.

The Kodiaks offence tops the ACAC at an average of 97 points per game, while also sitting fourth in the conference defensively.

Rookie Brock Dewsberry scored a career-high 33 points in a win over Ambrose last weekend and is fourth in conference scoring, averaging 23 points per game.

The Kodiaks women are on a three-game winning streak that has moved them to 3-1 as the 13 Rattlers come to town.

The team is third in the ACAC in offence, averaging more than 76 points per game.

Denajha Kie is first on the team with 16.3 points per game, while Natalie Hoyt is averaging 11.5.
