Attempted-murder suspect granted bail

A 29-year-old man accused of trying to kill another man on the Blood Reserve last month, has been released from custody and ordered to live with a cousin in Edmonton.

Judge Jerry LeGrandeur released Kyle Lewis Crow Chief Friday following a bail hearing in Lethbridge provincial court. The accused, who is charged with one count of attempted murder, was released on $20,000 no-cash bail, half of which is surety promised by his cousin should Crow Chief breach any of his release conditions. Crow Chief is on the hook for the other half.

Crow Chief, 29, is accused of shooting another man on the Blood Reserve Dec. 7. Police reported that at about 2:25 a.m. a 41-year-old man was shot, sustaining life-threatening injuries, and had to be rushed to a Calgary hospital.

A suspect fled the area, and RCMP major crimes responded to take over the investigation with the assistance of Blood Tribe and Lethbridge police.

Crow Chief was arrested two days later in Edmonton, and was in custody at the Edmonton Remand Centre, from which he appeared Friday by closed-circuit TV.

During his release, Crow Chief must remain under house arrest unless he is with his cousin or lawyer, and he is not be south of Calgary unless with his cousin or lawyer. He is also prohibited from having any contact with the complainant in the case, and he is not to possess any weapons.

The accused’s matter returns to court March 2, but he does not have to attend if he has signed a designation of counsel allowing his lawyer to appear for him.
