Start your new year with a Read On class

- Lil Radley

The new year brings good news for Lethbridge adults — a new round of affordable and flexible educational opportunities through Lethbridge Public Library’s Read On Adult Literacy and Learning.

You may not know it, but Read On is one of 100 community adult learning services that offers part-time, continuing education for adults in Alberta. Important to know is that:

• Flexible learning assistance is offered to those whose first language is English, and to those whose first language is not English.

• The only cost, usually a onetime $30 registration fee, could be reduced.

• Bus tickets and child minding could be provided.

• Talented volunteer tutors work with students to improve basic reading, writing, math, computer, listening, and speaking skills to a Grade 9 level.

• Learning opportunities include prepping for IELTS, CELPIP and Canadian Citizenship tests.

Current Read On students are improving their skills and working to achieve specific goals: some to go to the College, obtain GED qualifications, pass trade entry exams, move to better employment opportunities, or increase their computer skills.

Upcoming Read On classes that may help you achieve these, or your specific goals include:

• One-on-one tutoring focuses on your specific learning needs, and is scheduled when you can attend. Six different conversation classes range from Low Beginner to Intermediate, including Speechcraft.

• Pre-College Classes include Math Basics.

• Stories come alive during lively discussions at Book Talk. “To Kill a Mockingbird” has been selected for the winter classes. Introduction to Microsoft Word 2016 is an introduction to this and other Gale Courses.

• ESL Time for Rhymes offers family learning for moms, dads, other caregivers and their children.
