Alberta law enforcement to support Special Olympics with Virtual Summer Series

- LETHBRIDGE HERALD specialolympics.ca/albertatorchrun.

Officers from agencies across Alberta have teamed up to support Special Olympics Alberta with the first Virtual Summer Series.

Along with other charities and organizations, there has been a lapse in funding due to COVID-19, and this event offers the opportunity to raise money in a safe and social way.

Registration is open for the Virtual Summer Series, a new Alberta Law Enforcement Torch Run event, running from June 15 to Sept. 15. This three-part series has a 30-day suggested time frame for each leg, namely bike from June 15 to July 15, run from July 15 to Aug. 15, and walk from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15. Participants can register for one, two or three legs of the event and can set individual distance goals based on ability level. Each leg of the series is only $15 to register, and those who complete all three legs will receive a 2020 Virtual Summer Series medal when the series wraps up Sept. 15.

As a way to encourage individual and teams to get active, this event is a fundraiser where participants are encouraged to raise pledges while they are participating in any of the legs of the event, with incentives to help set fundraising goals.

The overall fundraising goal has been set at $50,000 which will help support Special Olympics Alberta as it continues to offer online training and workouts, virtual social opportunities, and mental health support to over 3,300 athletes.

This event is open to the public and people from across the world are invited to participate, as participants from the U.S. and Scotland have already joined this Summer Series. If you would like to get involved to help support Special Olympic athletes from across the province, visit
