U18 Canes undefeated in first three games
The Lethbridge U18AAA Hurricanes went undefeated in three games to kick off the season.
The Canes posted a win and two ties against the Okotoks Bow Mark Oilers in a threegame set in Alberta Elite Hockey League play Thursday through Sunday.
The Hurricanes and Oilers skated to a 3-3 tie Thursday night in Okotoks before the Canes prevailed at home Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 decision at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
Back in Okotoks Sunday, the teams settled for a 2-2 tie as the Hurricanes start the season 1-02.
On Sunday, Joel Mabin and Ayden Peters were the Lethbridge goal scorers, while goaltender Ty Young kicked out 40 of 42 shots.
The Hurricanes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period Saturday at Nicholas Sheran Arena as Rylen Roersma and Colby Garner scored shorthanded and Caden Heins added the other marker.
The Oilers netted the only goal of the second period on a marker from Conner Poffenroth and pulled even on a pair of power-play goals as Poffenroth added his second of the game and Liam Watkins tied it 3-3 with 11:11 remaining.
But the Canes struck late on the power play when Ty Fraser scored with 4:15 to go.
Erick Roest made 35 saves in the win.
On Thursday, Heins and Carter Deboer scored in the first period as Okotoks nursed a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
The Canes salvaged a tie when Mabin scored on the power play with 4:25 remaining.
Young stopped 20 of 23 shots in the tie and stopped 65 of 70 shots on the weekend for a .923 save percentage, good for fifth in the league.
Roest posted a .921 save percentage, good for seventh.
The Hurricanes are back home Nov. 7 when they host the Calgary Flames at 4:15 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
