Pronghorns reaching new heights in the classrom
They’re not getting the chance to show their stuff on the court or the field this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but that hasn’t stopped members of University of Lethbridge Pronghorns athletics from putting in MVP performances in the classroom.
Each year, U SPORTS spotlights its Academic AllCanadians, student athletes who excel in sport at the university level while also maintaining an 80 per cent average in academics.
This year, the Horns set a new standard with 84 of its student-athletes achieving the honour, accounting for more than 40 per cent of the school’s eligible varsity athletes achieving this prestigious status.
Normally, the feat would be celebrated with a banquet hosted by University President Dr. Mike Mahon, but due to the pandemic the Pronghorns are unable to host the event.
“Congratulations to all 84 recipients that achieved this great honour, it is a testament to all the hard work, dedication and focus Pronghorn Athletes dedicate to their studies and athletic endeavors,” said Mahon in a release.
“The university is extremely proud of this achievement by our student athletes.”
Men’s hockey led all Pronghorn teams with 15 members reaching AllCanadian status, followed closely by women’s rugby with 13 and women’s hockey with 10.
The 2019-20 Pronghorn Academic All-Canadians are also recipients of the Deb Steacy AAC Scholarship.
Since the inception of the All-Canadian program in 1990, 1,219 Pronghorn varsity athletes have been named Academic All-Canadians.
