City not reopening recreation facilities yet

Despite the recent easing of provincial health restrictions, the City of Lethbridge will not be re-opening city-owned recreation facilities to the public.

“The reality is the recent announcement of easing of some restrictions doesn’t allow for usage of the facilities we were hoping for, explained City of Lethbridge general manager of Culture and Recreation Robin Harper.

“We have worked with our user groups since the announcement to determine what level of usage they would require. That level of usage does not meet the requirements to have all the other facilities opened.”

According to Harper, the City will maintain ice at ATB Centre, and work directly with community groups who are permitted to run this training. The ENMAX Centre will also remain open to support the Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Western Hockey League. All other City arenas, and pools operated by Recreation Excellence, will remain closed for now.

All pools and arenas have been closed to the public since December 8. Community groups, including minor hockey, figure skating and other team sports, have not been permitted on the ice or in pools since November 12.

Harper acknowledged many residents hoping to return to local sport and other recreational activities at City run facilities will be disappointed by the decision.

“It was a difficult decision,” he admitted, “but at this time, without clear direction and usage of those facilities, we cannot re-open them.”
